Studies show that within the first 3 seconds of meeting an individual you have already been sized up and an opinion has been formed. Your necktie is one of the few items of apparel through which a man can reveal his true personality before a word has been spoken. What does your tie say about you?

“Colors give off very specific signals,” states David Zyla, New York-based author of Color Your Style. “The same suit can be transformed with different tie colors, each with a very different impact and message.”

If you walk into a bespoke tailor shop located in London’s exclusive Savile Row and ask to purchase an Eton school silk repp tie, it’s very possible that they will refuse to sell it to you unless you can prove you are an alumnus. Why so strict about a piece of silk worn about your collar? Ties can announce where you went to school, what club you are a member of, or reveal your personality traits to the world. It’s important to know what your choice of ties is revealing to others, both associates and strangers.

Purple is the color of royalty and exudes a self-confident attitude. Why is purple associated with royalty?  In ancient times, this color was called Tyrian purple or Imperial purple. To achieve the deep reddish-purple natural dye, a particular secretion was extracted from the glands of tens of thousands of crushed and decomposed sea snails that were left to scorch in the sun. Sounds revolting, doesn’t it? Yet this incredibly labor intensive process created a dye that was worth more than gold. The purple dye was so highly valued that Queen Elizabeth I created a sumptuary law forbidding anyone but close relatives of the royal family to wear purple. This was to ensure the color not only reflected the wearer's wealth but also their regal status and ties to the monarchy. As that was roughly 400 years ago, feel free to wear a purple tie; the fashion police will not arrest you.

Red is considered the power tie. If your aim is to project energy, intensity and assertiveness, if you want to be noticed, wear a red tie.  You will appear authoritative and ambitious. The classic power combination of a dark suit, white shirt and a red tie persists as the preference of politicians and aspiring business leaders the world over. Are you ready to ask the boss for a raise? Wear a red tie. He/she will know you mean business.

A black tie is sophisticated and normally reserved for formal occasions. Think James Bond at Casino Royale. If you insist on wearing a black tie in a non-formal setting, a white shirt is too much of a contrast. Try a shirt that has a small pattern and a touch of color. A silk tie that blends black with other fashionable colors would work even better. See this stunning tie from LESOVS.

Grey with a shine is a modern look and coveys an elegant sense of style and an international savoir faire attitude. Grey paired with a subtle pastel hue toned shirt, such as pale lavender or peach would be terrific in the summer and exhibit your fashion knowledge.

Green is considered too distracting for the workplace, except on Saint Patrick’s Day, when it signifies confidence, reassurance and a “team-player” attitude.

A blue tie is thought to be the safest color. Blue is considered to have a calming effect, reflecting the sky and the ocean. It is also considered the other international power color. Blue implies trust, security and self-assurance. This is the reason pilots are dressed in blue.

Earth tone colored ties imply a relaxed, friendly, approachable person. Browns and tans are perfect for people who are involved with professional sales or doing business with other people such as teachers and the service industry.

A yellow tie can represent a positive outlook and an optimistic point of view. Yellow is seen as approachable, trustworthy and friendly. But it is important to always study the culture you will be visiting while traveling abroad. For instance, you should never wear yellow in Malaysia as this color is reserved specifically for royalty. And in France, yellow signifies jealousy, betrayal, and contradiction. So if you are meeting with a person from another country, be aware of possible cultural faux pas when it comes to choosing colors.

The psychology of color is so important to consider.  Color evokes strong emotions, meanings and feelings and varies greatly across the world’s cultures. Doing the research and being sensitive to another’s culture also reveals the type of person you are.
